The Estate

A legacy planted in gravel, poured for generations

Sassicaia's story began in 1944, when Mario Incisa della Rocchetta planted the first Cabernet Sauvignon vines on the gravelled slopes of Castiglioncello di Bolgheri.

For more than twenty years the wine remained a private affair, poured only for family and close friends, before the landmark 1968 vintage's commercial release in 1971 went on to redefine what Italian wine could be.

Today, the estate remains in the hands of the founding family, now guided by its third generation.

"The only motivation is my boundless respect for Nature, in all its forms, in all its manifestations, in all its mysteries, in all its miracles, which we continue to discover and must never cease to admire."

Mario Incisa della Rocchetta — Florence, March 1984

“We are delighted that Restaurant Gordon Ramsay has chosen Tenuta San Guido for the first dinner in this new series. Bringing together four vintages of Sassicaia spanning more than thirty years offers a rare opportunity to explore the wine’s continuity and evolution over time. Guidalberto adds another perspective to the evening, in the year in which its twenty-fifth vintage marks an important milestone in the development of the project.

Both wines are expressions of the distinctive culture of Tenuta San Guido, where viticulture is part of a 2,500-hectare agricultural estate in Bolgheri and coexists with woodland, olive groves and a wildlife refuge. This relationship between agriculture, landscape and biodiversity has shaped the estate’s identity for generations, and the wines offer us the most immediate and meaningful way to share our vision with people around the world.”
